What I want to know is when did big business take over every corner of adventure sports?

Just a few days ago a huge fight broke out on Mt. Everest between two veteran freelance climbers and a group of about 100 Sherpas.

The Sherpas said that it was because they had asked the climbers not to climb above them while they were setting ropes for a “tourist” group of climbers that were part of an organized expedition group.  The climbers claimed in a live interview with NPR that no one had approached them about where to climb, but where aware that the larger expedition companies and the Sherpas often coordinated their climbs and routes to the top and when who could climb where.  Both Outside Magazine and NPR are actively covering this story.

There is all kinds of coverage around who did what to whom.  Broader discussions about cultural awareness and how the Sherpas feel used by the wealthy adventure tourists who make them set their lines, put up their tents, carry their oxygen and treat them badly.  And I will let you read all that at the links above.

Slow Joes at NOC.

Slow Joes at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) Outpost, North Carolina.

What is a crossroads really?  Is it a confluence of paths?  A decision point?  A meeting place?

What if it were all three of those things?

Last weekend I got to visit the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) just outside of Bryson City, North Carolina.  Nestled between the Smoky Mountains and Cherokee, NOC sits at a confluence of outdoor adventure sports and is well on its way to becoming a Chautauqua for outdoor adventure faithful.  The Appalachian Trail cuts straight through the compound over the river at Founders Bridge.  Up river from the bridge two whitewater rafts are coming in from a cold, early season run in 38 degree water.  Just down river, the National Junior Canadian Whitewater team is dancing in the foam preparing for the Freestyle World Championships.  Their moves almost choreographed, reminiscent of gymnastics routines.

I remember the funk that used to come over me when the weather changed and I had to hang up the diving gear for the Winter.  I get the same kind of feeling now when I move my yaks to the garage and hang up my paddles during the colder months.

For those that can afford it, there is an alternative.  Our friends at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) located just outside of the Smoky Mountains in Gatlinburg  have provided us with a great product review of an entry-level drysuit.

Unboxing review of the Head-to-Boat navigation light system for kayaks, canoes, rowboats and small sailboats…How about BICYCLES?

I met these guys at Paddlefest in Cinci and immediately fell in love with the prototype these guys had.  They finally made it available to the public in December of last year.  The guys that came up with this are from right here in Ohio, hailing form Meigs County.  Check out their website at  http://headtoboat.com/illumarine.php and their Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/Illumarine .
